If I had to sum up Chery before July 9, 2026 in one word, I would say: "engineering geek."
Engine thermal efficiency, platform architecture, chassis tuning—these are the assets Chery has accumulated over more than two decades, and they are also the entirety of how the industry perceives it. This company is like an engineer who has spent years immersed in the lab, clutching a pile of hardcore technology in his hands, yet inarticulate and even less adept at using fashionable language to speak with young people.
But on the evening of July 9, Chery changed.

At Beijing ShengBai Art Space, an event called the "Fengyun A9 Technology Aesthetics Show" was held. There was no PPT of engine parameters, no exploded diagrams of platform architecture, no executives standing on stage reading scripts. In their place was a true high-fashion runway show.

At the same time, the presale prices for the Fengyun A9 were officially announced: 655km Pro version 115,900 yuan, 655km Max version 125,900 yuan, 655km Max LiDAR version 135,900 yuan. All three versions have completely identical range, with a 70kWh Rhino E dedicated pure electric battery standard across the lineup. This is almost unheard of in the 150,000-yuan-class pure electric market. The industry's hidden rule of giving the entry version a small battery and charging more for long range was directly overturned by Chery with a single price sheet.

Six haute couture outfits, wearing the car on the body
Chery invited fashion designer DEMON ZHANG, a graduate of the Royal College of Art and Central Saint Martins who previously worked at Alexander McQueen and Christian Dior, to tailor six haute couture outfits specifically for the Fengyun A9. Each outfit corresponds to one of the Fengyun A9's core product strengths, answering in the language of fashion "why a car is worth being liked."

"Extraordinary Magenta" draws inspiration from the electroplated metallic luster of the Fengyun A9's begonia red paint; "3D Misty Rain" uses 3D Mesh fabric to recreate the breathable texture of the cabin; "Silent Rose" incorporates the car's soundproofing cotton material into layer upon layer of rose shapes; "Guarding Clouds" integrates airbag cushioning fabric into the lining of the skirt; "Shu Brocade Radiance" extracts the interior's exclusive pearlescent Shu brocade to make a Tang-style vest; "3nm Core Motion" uses a Tang-style vest as its base, with mechanical petals opening and closing with the model's steps.
From paint to cabin materials, from airbags to smart chips. The cold parameters of the automotive industry were stitched thread by thread into the warp and weft of fashion.

The runway lineup was equally uncompromising. Six top models performed together, including Lu Xianren, a model from the Paris Fashion Week runway, and Chao Renleng, winner of the Shenzhen Original Fashion Week Creative Award. This was not the automaker's usual "find a model to stand beside the car and take photos," but a truly professional show that can withstand scrutiny from the fashion world.
Why did the "engineering geek" suddenly learn how to dress up?
Some say this was a successful marketing plan. But in my view, it is far more than that.
The Fengyun A9 has already won the 2026 German Red Dot Product Design Award. With an original design language called "Lingfeng Aesthetics," it secured this ticket in front of the harshest jury in the international design world. This means Chery's design capability no longer needs to be packaged with "marketing talk"—what Red Dot judges look at is proportion, detail, and mass-production feasibility.
The significance of the Technology Aesthetics Show lies in telling this already internationally recognized design capability in a way the general public can perceive.

For a long time, the design of Chinese auto brands has taken two paths. Either copy overseas styles outright, or pile so-called "Chinese elements" onto the body as decoration. The Fengyun A9's "Lingfeng Aesthetics" takes a third path, completing a modern translation of Eastern aesthetics with a highly confident original design language. The whole vehicle adopts a fastback coupe shape, with golden proportions of a 4.39 axle-to-wheel ratio, 1.28 width-to-height ratio, and 0.45 wheel-to-height ratio, giving this coupe nearly 4.9 meters long a stance that is stretched yet not bloated. The interior's Shu brocade radiant pearlescent eco-friendly leather, with 8.68㎡ of soft wrapping throughout the car, brings the texture of millennia-old woven brocade from the museum into the cabin.

But "knowing how to dress up" does not get in the way of "getting real things done"—this is what makes the engineering geek most reassuring.
The Fengyun A9 presale this time comes with a set of benefits that can be called "ultimate backstop" level. First is the assisted driving backstop: for the first non-commercial owner, within one year from the date of purchase, in parking scenarios or intelligent navigation scenarios, if an accident is judged to be caused by "reasons of the intelligent driving assistance system," resulting in casualties in the vehicle and compensation for third-party losses, the maximum compensation is 5 million yuan. At a time when domestic smart driving policies have not yet been fully implemented, this is equivalent to giving users a reassurance pill.
Second is the power battery safety backstop: if the first non-commercial owner's vehicle suffers thermal runaway and is destroyed due to reasons of the power battery itself, Chery will compensate with a new car of the same model or a new car no lower than the original configuration. Combined with the standard 70kWh Rhino E battery across the lineup, the cells pass 10 times the national standard nail penetration test and IP68 waterproofing with 48-hour immersion protection, which is 96 times the national standard. The confidence behind this promise comes from solid technical reserves. In addition, there is lifetime warranty for the whole vehicle and a lifetime maintenance package.

From "standing on technology" to "equally emphasizing aesthetics," Chery completed a leap in brand tone with a fashion show. From the industry's hidden rule of "entry versions cut corners" to "70-degree battery across the lineup + lifetime warranty + accident backstop," Chery laid the engineering geek's sincerity on the table with one configuration sheet and one benefits list.

Aesthetics, the last piece of the puzzle for Chinese automobiles
Over the past decade, Chinese auto brands have caught up with or even surpassed traditional giants in electrification and intelligence. But "design" has always been the weak link. We are used to saying "this car looks like whose," and rarely say "this car is simply itself."
The answer given by the Fengyun A9 is: the design of Chinese automobiles no longer needs to be a substitute for anyone else.
When a brand known as an "engineering geek" built on engines and chassis begins to use haute couture instead of parameter PPTs, and a runway instead of a launch podium, the signal it releases is already clear enough: Chery is no longer satisfied with being the "top student in technology"; it also wants a say in aesthetics.
