In the past two years, the extended-range SUV market has been fiercely competitive. Many models compete over interiors and screens, but hidden hard power like the chassis and the three-electric system often gets watered down.
The SAIC Volkswagen ID.ERA 8X, just launched, counts as a large five-seat extended-range SUV where a German brand has truly settled down and shown sincerity. Today let's not exaggerate or unfairly criticize—let's talk about this car's hardcore advantages and share my own honest views.

1. 800V high-voltage platform, no more waiting around to recharge
Many extended-range cars still use a 400V architecture, and their fast-charging speed is quite ordinary. The ID.ERA 8X, by contrast, directly adopts an 800V silicon carbide high-voltage platform.
On the long-range version, charging from 10% to 80% can be completed in as little as 16 minutes. On a long highway trip, when you pull into a service area, by the time you use the restroom and grab a quick bite, the battery is already topped up.
For daily city commuting, the pure electric CLTC range is up to 451 km, so for everyday errands it can absolutely be driven as a pure EV; for long trips, the range extender provides a fallback, so there's no pure-EV range anxiety. It also supports 3.5 kW external discharge, making camping and outdoor power use convenient.

2. EA211 golden range extender, backed by Volkswagen's decades of maturity
One of the core highlights of this car is this EA211 range extender.
It is not a newly developed experimental product, but a mature engine validated by 25 million installations worldwide, with a maximum thermal efficiency of 43%, equipped with a VTG variable-geometry turbo and 350-bar high-pressure direct injection.
My understanding: the biggest fear for a range extender is vibration and loud noise during high-speed, prolonged operation. With Volkswagen's EA211 setup, during sustained high-speed operation, cabin quietness is quite good; with double-layered laminated glass, when the range extender kicks in, there is no obvious harsh noise in the cabin. It also only needs 92-octane gasoline, so over long trips the cost of use is friendly.
With a full tank and full charge, the maximum combined range can reach 1,602 km. Whether it's a long road trip in Northeast China or a long cross-province drive, you feel very confident.

3. High trim with dual-chamber air suspension + CDC continuously variable damping, German chassis really isn't just a slogan
This is also what I think is the most competitive aspect of this car.
Many competitors at the same price either only have single-chamber air suspension or only CDC dampers. The high trim of the ID.ERA 8X directly offers closed dual-chamber air suspension + CDC continuously variable damping shock absorbers, paired with a predictive magic carpet system.
The suspension lift range is up to 150 mm, and the system can perceive potholes ahead in advance and adjust suspension firmness in advance.
On rough roads, national highways, and icy or snowy surfaces, the chassis can rise for better passability; at high-speed cruising, the chassis automatically lowers to increase body stability. When quickly going over speed bumps or large potholes, it filters bumps cleanly and decisively, without excess bouncing. With the independent suspension foundation of double wishbones at the front and a five-link rear, body posture is very stable during high-speed lane changes and cornering—this is the craftsmanship of German chassis tuning.

4. Door-panel magic small screen, clever thinking in the details (Smart Surface door intelligent control screen)
In many cars, all operations are crammed onto the central control large screen, and rear passengers adjusting temperature or seats still have to call out voice commands or lean forward.
In the ID.ERA 8X Ultra version, the left and right rear door panels come with hidden Smart Surface magic screens.
With a micro-perforated hidden design, when off they look like a flat door panel; when lit, rear passengers can directly adjust seats, air conditioning, and multimedia on the door panel screen.
There's no need to bother the driver, and it's convenient for family members, elderly people, and children in the rear to operate. This kind of detail truly takes the car-use experience of everyone in the vehicle into account, rather than only catering to the driver.

5. Other bonus features, not stripped down even at entry level
In addition to the hardcore selling points above, this car also has many solid features.
The entire lineup comes standard with Momenta R7 world-model intelligent driving, with lidar, and highway and urban navigation assistance are available right away, not as a future OTA promise; the cabin has a 12L dual-door intelligent heating and cooling refrigerator; W-HUD head-up display; 9 airbags, and ANC active noise cancellation.
Large five-seat layout, body just over 5 meters, 2,970 mm wheelbase. With no third row squeezing space, second-row legroom and trunk space are both very generous, suitable for families that don't strictly need 6 or 7 seats and value rear-seat comfort more.

Let's talk about my personal view
Many new forces in carmaking nowadays stack large screens and flashy features, but core hardware like the chassis and range extender lacks long-term market validation.
Volkswagen ID.ERA 8X takes a different route: mature EA211 range extender + 800V fast charging, and on high trim it directly provides dual-chamber air suspension + CDC magic carpet chassis.
It is not simply piling configurations together, but applying German years of chassis-tuning expertise to an extended-range model.
Of course, objectively speaking, this car does not have rear-wheel steering, so flexibility when making U-turns on narrow city roads will be somewhat discounted. But if you pursue long-distance stability, high-speed quality, and comfort on rough roads, this car's chassis advantages will stand out strongly.
It suits friends who often drive long distances, enjoy road trips, value chassis quality, don't want to step into the pit of new three-electric system solutions, and prefer mature and stable hardware.

At a starting price in the low 200,000s, it can offer an 800V platform and a mature extended-range system, with dual-chamber air suspension + magic carpet chassis on high trim. It's clear that Volkswagen is seriously making a push in the new energy arena this time.
If you are looking at a 200,000-250,000 yuan class extended-range large five-seat SUV, this ID.ERA 8X is worth a visit to the store for a static look + test drive to really experience it. What do you think—for an extended-range car, do you value chassis quality more, or faster charging speed? Welcome to chat in the comments.
