Recently, after photos of the actual new BYD Dolphin were exposed, there has been a huge uproar online, and many car enthusiasts have come to ask Nianhan what he thinks. So today I’ll talk about this facelifted little Dolphin and share some of my views with everyone, for reference only. Let’s start with the exterior. This time, the main areas changed on the new Dolphin are the front and rear, while the overall body hasn’t changed much. The front changes are quite obvious. The headlight outline has been adjusted and looks smoother, and paired with the new grille it looks more pleasing to the eye. The front bumper styling has also been redesigned, making it look sportier and younger than before. In terms of dimensions, the length of the new Dolphin has increased by 130 mm, and the vehicle length is now 4280 mm, while the width and height remain 1770 mm and 1570 mm, and the wheelbase is still 2700 mm. The benefit of the increased length is theoretically some improvement in interior space, but how it actually performs will have to wait until the real car goes on sale. Viewed from the side, the new Dolphin is almost identical to the old model, with no changes to the contour lines or anything else. However, the wheels have been changed to a new style. Whether it looks good is a matter of opinion; personally, I think it’s not bad and quite dynamic. The rear has also changed quite a bit, with the most noticeable being the taillights. The new Dolphin continues to use full-width taillights, but the internal light cluster details have been adjusted, making the illuminated effect cooler and more recognizable. The rear bumper has also been optimized, echoing the style of the front face, and the overall feeling is more coordinated. The interior of the new Dolphin has not yet been fully exposed, and the official word is that there will be minor adjustments. As a car owner, I can speculate based on experience that there will most likely be an updated infotainment system and optimization of some detail designs, such as adding some storage space. From my personal experience, the interior design of the current Dolphin is actually already quite good, simple and elegant, and relatively convenient to use. If the new model can improve further on the existing basis, that would be even better. Having discussed the exterior and interior, let’s move on to the powertrain. This time, the new Dolphin offers three different motor power outputs, namely 70 kW, 130 kW, and 150 kW. To be honest, this change is quite a pleasant surprise. There are more choices, which can meet the needs of different consumers. Those who prefer economy and practicality can choose the 70 kW version. Those pursuing performance can choose the 130 kW or 150 kW version. But to be honest, for a small car like the Dolphin, 70 kW of power is actually already enough, and it is completely fine for daily commuting. Another point worth noting is that the new Dolphin can be optionally equipped with an intelligent driving system. This means the new car will be equipped with cameras and radar, and the specific configuration is estimated to be similar to that of other high-trim BYD models. Mainstream intelligent driving assistance functions currently on the market, such as adaptive cruise control, lane keeping, and automatic parking, should all be achievable on the new Dolphin. This is definitely good news for novice drivers, as it can greatly reduce driving difficulty and improve driving safety. Of course, if you are an experienced driver and are confident in your own driving skills, you can also choose not to option it and save some money. At this point, let’s sort through the key information again. The new Dolphin has a younger and sportier exterior, a slightly increased vehicle length, richer powertrain choices, and an optional intelligent driving system. As for the price, it has not yet been announced, but it is estimated to be slightly more expensive than the current model, since the configuration has been upgraded after all. So is the new Dolphin worth buying? Nianhan believes this depends on your specific needs. If you are buying a car for the first time, or are preparing to switch to a more economical and practical commuter car, then the new Dolphin is a good choice. It has a stylish appearance, rich configuration, sufficient power, and decent intelligent driving assistance functions, which can meet most people’s daily car needs. However, if you are currently driving the existing Dolphin and are fairly satisfied with all aspects of your car, then I think there is no need to rush to change cars. After all, this new Dolphin is only a mid-cycle facelift, not a completely new generation, and the overall improvement has not reached an earth-shaking level. Moreover, the current Dolphin itself is also a very good small car with a good reputation in the market, and it can definitely be driven for a few more years.
